Quilting: a new (old) hobby

Years ago I picked up a little how-to-quilt book at Walmart and made my first quilt. After that full-sized one, I made one baby quilt. And then I guess I got busy and didn’t make time for it and the next thing I knew, it was nearly thirty years later and I decided I’d like to re-learn to quilt.

I decided my reintroduction to quilting would be making a watch-me-grow baby quilt for my youngest granddaughter. When baby Journey arrived a few weeks ahead of schedule, I had to speed things up to get it done!

For Journey’s quilt, I used a printed panel by Robert Kaufmann that has the look of appliqué. I was drawn to this design because their nursery theme for little Journey is butterflies. It’s even more perfect because her big sis called her “my baby princess.” Cuteness. Overload.

I quilted the entire thing by hand, and attached pre-made binding by hand. I marathon-quilted for 3 days after Journey was born so I could get it delivered by her one week birthday.

My hand was tired, y’all.

It’s not perfect but I’m tickled with how it came out and it was great practice for hand-quilting.

I’m gave my stitching fingers a few weeks off before starting another quilting project I already had planned.

If you quilt or want to pretend you do, you might enjoy these sweet fictional novels written around the theme. They helped fuel my newly rekindled interest. I’ve read the first two in the Cobbled Court Quilts series and just discovered there are 3 more in the series. There’s also the Elm Creek Quilts series, which has twenty-one books, though I’ve only read one so far.

Hi Jamie. I followed you on See Jamie Blog through the years and loved reading about your homeschooling adventures. Much like you, after having homeschooled for 19 years, I have 3 years and 1 student left to graduate before I retire from homeschooling. So I will enjoy following you on this next stage of the journey…life after homeschooling.

I love your quilting! Your quilt for Journey turned out so beautifully! I adore the Elm Creek Quilts series of books, and I’ve read 1 of the Cobbled Court Quilts series. After reading those books, I wanted to start quilting but realized I don’t enjoy sewing. I do, however, enjoy crocheting, so I am going to try to create a crocheted afghan with a quilted feel and look.

Looking forward to following you on your new blog!

Hi, Jennifer! Thanks for following me on over here. It’s been a big change no longer homeschooling after all those year.

Welcome back to blogging! I loved reading all your homeschool blog posts. I used to love blogging our homeschool life and I was surprised when one of our adult kids told me not to long ago how they love reading the blog now and seeing all the memories I documented. 🙂 And, I LOVE that you are quilting. I work in a quilt store now and I am just learning. I’m starting a wedding quilt for Lexi as she will be getting married in the next year. Wish me luck – glad I work at a quilt store – I’m going to need their support to get through this.

Oh, a wedding quilt: how exciting! I love all the memories my old blog documented, too, and a couple of the older kids and I have even used it to remember what year we did something or things like that. So fun. Thanks for taking time to comment!

I think especially after identifying for so long as a homeschooling mom, this will be just one neat way to remind myself who I am beyond that chapter of life.
